Why do tomatoes get dark purple looking stems?

If they are young plants, this could mean a phosphorous deficiency or that temperatures are a bit too low. Give them in a little bone meal and increase the temperature some.

If they are older plants, this con sometimes happen with aging but does not cause any issues.
