The article on cytospora canker says the only solution is to prune the affected area, but I have amber sap coming out of the trunk of my weeping cherry tree, about 4 feet up, so I think the cause isn't a boring insect. Any idea of how I can protect my tree given I can't prune out the trunk? Thank you! Bruce
Usually by the time you have this issue on the trunk the disease has progressed in the tree.
There is no treatment but you can try bacericide products containing fixed copper.
You could also have the tree looked at by an professional arborist.
Best of luck.

Are the cherries from a weeping cherry harmful to dogs or children? I have a puppy and grandchildren and want to know if the fruits are edible or harmful.
There are many different types of Weeping Cherry cultivators.
Cherries are among many fruit trees that have poisonous parts.
Most fruit trees contain cyanogenic glycosides, a substance that causes cyanide poisoning.
Cherry Trees have trace amounts of cyanide in the seeds, stems, flowers and leaves.
I live in a co op. They trimmed about 12 inches of my tree without me knowing THEY WERE GOING TO DO IT! When I went outside, I was very upset. My question is, will it grow back? It looks so short and they are not professional landscapers. They told me it will grow back but I do not have any confidence in them. They just cut without any care where or how they did it and sawed off a thick branch. Can I do anything to help it grow now? I even know that you do not prune trees in the summer, and I am not a landscaper. Please help me a my beautiful tree.
You are correct about pruning now--this is not the time. Prune in late winter and remove the three āDāsā: dead, diseased or dying. While it will grow back, the blooming may be inhibited as a result of improper pruning but over time this can be fixed. In the future, this article will help with pruning: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/weeping-cherry/pruning-weeping-cherry.htm
There are two medium size roots on top of the ground from my weeping cherry. They are going under my house and it is hard to mow. Can I cut these roots? The tree was planted correctly.
You can cut those roots and hope that it does not destroy the tree (depending on how much water/nutrients the tree gets from these roots) but eventually, you are going to have to choose between the tree and the slab/foundation of your house. Also, if you do cut away the roots, you might have to trim the top portion of the tree too bring it back into balance and lessen the stress on the tree.
Our weeping cherry tree has branches growing straight up. What or why is this happening, except all the rain we got this year opposite of last year and the tree is about 4 years? We don't think it is grafted. The branches are growing straight up, doesn't even look like the branches on the tree. What is this and will it grow and then begin to weep or what? We have a weeping Mulberry and it seems to be doing the same. We have had a great wet year compared to last year so what do we do or just sit and watch what they do? Thank you!
A previous pruning may have removed the weeping branches of the plant. The weeping comes from grafts and once the grafted weeping branches are damaged or pruned back to severely, the natural upright branches return. Those that have yet to be pruned may be in need of pruning to get it to start 'weeping' downward. The tree has begun developing shoots from the side which we would like to eliminate. How should I go about doing this without harming the tree?
Just trim away the suckers that are growing. Do this as soon as you see them.
