We got a new place and want to put some lawns in our yard. The yard is full of weeds. In preparation for a new yard, what is the best way to kill the weeds?
It takes a little time, but with diligence you can get rid of most of them. I didn't see a location for you, but this time of year in the U.S. you can still add nitrogen one more time to your lawn. You can apply one of those that includes an herbicide for weeds.
Fall and spring are the times to apply a preemergent, which helps stop weeds from growing.
If you still have weeds in late spring, you can apply a postemergent to continue the eradication process.
Keeping the grass mowed will help prevent weeds from going to seed, and dropping them to lie in wait.
Also, proper mowing heights, watering and fertilizing will go a long way toward reducing the number of weeds that can grow. The healthier and thicker the lawn, the less weeds that can germinate.

Lawn Reno, lawn killed off with round up, all dead sod removed, nothing growing, tilled 6” base, added 15 yrs more to he approx 1500;2q ft lawn. Contoured, rolled, starter fertilizer added with new Seed. Used Scott’s bluegrass/ sunny mix with water technology for drought conditions. Lawn came up looked good in first 10 days. A week latter it was completely taken over by crab grass. I never had this weed or a lawn in such bad condition. My old lawn was far better. I cannot help but sate that the top soil must have been full of weed seeds. Probably the dead grassy stuff m6 experienced landscaper had never seen before.
Unfortunately, you may have to start over! Solarizing large swaths of land can be difficult, but not impossible. This will be a good way to go about killing off the seeds, and roots.
This article will help you to solarize soil:
I pulled up all he ivy, vinca vines, pachysandra & Day Lillies from growing back? IF I cover the flower bed with new potting soil & peat moss will that work? Thanks.
No, that will help them to grow back, more vigorously.
You could try a few things, but I would combine multiple things.
The first thing to do will be to pour boiling water over the area. This will kill off most things, immediately. Do this once or twice a day for about 3 days or so.
After you have done this, you can cover the bed with plastic to kill off anything else that survived the water treatment.
Once treatment is done, you can plant into your fresh soil.
Here are some articles that will help:

I have grass that runs. It took a lot of work to get a garden bed going and its a lot of work keeping this running grass out of the bed. What's the best way to remove and maintain clean garden beds without chemicals?
Without knowing what type of grass is invading your flower beds, it's tough to know what will work, however, one way to deter the grass is to dig a trench around the bed and use horticultural vinegar or some other form of grass killer. Perhaps the most effective course would be to dig a trench and pour a concrete barrier between your lawn and garden beds. Here's an article with natural remedies: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/weeds/how-to-kill-grass-naturally-kill-unwanted-grass-in-your-yard.htm

Hi. Garden overgrown with weeds, brambles and nettles, just thick with it. I am looking to clear all weeds and put a lawn, clean up around trees that are at the edges and possibly put a dwelling at one or two stories. The plot is approx 300 sq meters. I know nothing of gardening. I am prepared to weed out all roots by hand. Looking then to raise it all. Guess a load of top soil and a digger to level? Was thinking half a meter higher. Thank you!
You have your work cut out for you! It looks like you need machinery to knock down the overgrown material and clear it before killing weeds. I'm not sure a weedeater could handle it.

Hello. I just had my back yard garden area landscaped by a local landscaper. I was watering the plants this morning noticed one laying on it's side. When I looked at it I discovered it had been placed on top of the weed barrier, with no hole cut and held in place by the cedar mulch they laid down. I had watched them as they did this area of my yard and everything look ok. They removed the weeds that were there then laid down fabric weed barrier then put in the plants. But the plants are on top of the weed barrier. Will they be ok or will they die?
I would call the landscape company and speak to the manager. I'm sure he will send a crew out right away to properly install the plants under the weed fabric. There should be slits in the fabric for that purpose. As it is the roots do not have enough protection with just mulch covering them and they probably won't make it through the summer.
