We had to vut back all of the limbs on a massive Sego palm bush from a freeze. (Was like this when bought house). There are massive small ones. How do we remove them so we only have two or three of the largest? I dont want to kill the big one.
If you want to remove the dead shoots, you can, as long as there are some younger ones to replace it still alive. Just trim back to the number that you want, and make sure to wipe the area with peroxide after the cut, so that they do not get an infection.
I’ve read the articles on not cutting any green fronds but mine are green, brown, and yellow all on the same branch. I noticed a new horn coming up the middle of the Sego. Can I go ahead and trim everything except the new horn? My Sego looks tacky.
Do not trim anything with any green on it. Leaving this to die naturally will pull vital nutrients back in from those leaves into the main plant. Taking these off will do much more harm than good. It is best to only cut off anything that is completely dead. Otherwise, doing this will leave you with a dead plant very shortly.
I have a 6 or 8 year male that has started to derided at the very crown into two plants both of same size. not a side branch but dividing into two palms. I not sure but seems that very unique. Should i let it go or will that split and kill the plant. Tom At crawnet@bellsouth.net
This can be a common occurrence, and will be fine to grow this way. This article will give you more information about these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/css/summary/edit.html/ref=typ_rev_edit?ie=UTF8&orderID=114-5117793-0508211
My sago palm has a jelly like substance on it. Is it alive and can it be saved?
This appears to have suffered severe damage. Cycads will not be able to recover from this kind of damage. It is never good to trim off the dead growth unless there is new living growth to replace it. This is likely dead, or on its way out.
This article will help you to care for them in the future: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/sago-palm/how-to-care-for-sago-palms.htm
During the past severe winter, my mature sago palm suffered frost damage. Many of the fronds turned yellow, although some were still green. I trimmed some of the dead growth off and left the green ones. Unfortunately, a few days ago, without asking me, my lawn care crew completely cut all the fronds off, right up to the trunk of the plant, leaving just a stump. Needless to say, I am very angry about the situation. My question is, does this sago have a chance of recovering from the damage? If so, what do I need to do to help it? I'd appreciate any advice you have. Thank you. Dianne Pingree Austin, TX
There is nothing that you can do to help it, really, at this point. Removing all of the fronds will usually result in the death of this cycad, unfortunately. Sometimes, as they are dying, they can shoot up a replacement pup or two. Just be patient, and you might see a replacement soon. If not, then the plant has suffered irreparable damage due to the negligent pruning.
Is this normal???
I notice that all of the growth has been cut off. This will usually result in the death of the plant. The male flowers are, more than likely, the last ditch effort to spread the genetics of the plant before it passes.
There does appear to be replacement pups coming out nearby. Once the large stalk dies back completely, that will be the new pup that takes over. It will be starting over fresh, from the beginning again.
I have a male bloom on my Sago palm, but it has sprouts coming out of it, is this normal?
Can you include a photo? This is quite odd. I will be more than glad to help, but I will have to see what is going on.
