I have cut all limbs to core, will the plant die?
These cycads will not tolerate being pruned very heavily. It is likely that they might die if there are no leaves to provide energy to the plant.
Here is an article for more information on their care: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/sago-palm/how-to-care-for-sago-palms.htm
Will a Sego come back after a hard freeze? We live in South Mississippi, usually mild. all the leaves were froze , I cut the leaves off just the trunk standing. thank you l
This is usually deadly for a sago. Cutting all of the leaves off is also not a good idea. I know it is almost instinct to do so, but it is best to wait until you see new growth to cut the leaves off.
This may not recover, but the only thing to do now is to wait and see if there is any new growth.
Should I remove all fronds because of freeze damage?
I would not do this until you see new growth to replace it. This can kill it to do so.
Why are warnings not provided with the sale of a Sago Palm regarding the threat of poison to dogs and cats? My dog broke open a seed, and is now hanging on for her life. If I would have known the dangers that were a threat to my animals, I would have never placed a Sago Palm in my yard.
There are many sources that say this is very toxic to dogs. When it comes to plant safe pets it is best to research any plants before bring them around. I am faced with the same task with my children. This website lists the dangers of this tree to dogs: https://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/poisoning-toxicity/c_dg_sago_palm_toxicity%20
Can lower sago palm fronds damaged by frost be trimmed? What is best way to remove damaged fronds from sago palm? Thanks, James Luksa
Yes, as long as you do not remove the center. Only take off 10 percent of the leaves... meaning if there are 10 leaves, only take one. If there are 100, then take ten, etc. Wait a few days, and take another ten percent. This will reduce the shock of trimming them.
I have a male Sago Palm... every year he produces his cone. Last year it was 2 and so far this year I've counted 7. Is this normal? Why would he produce so many?
As a mature plant, this is healthy. This indicates that it is well taken care of and very happy.
My Female cycad sago palm flowered and produced red seeds. She also produced 7 offspring plants which we cut off. Since then 2 more offsrings amerged. But it looked like the growt off my cycad stopped. I know they stop growing in autum but she hasnt produced new leaves yet. The male nearby also produced offsprings and is showing new growt, should l worry about my female? We had unuasal amounts off rain this summer here in South Africa so I know the soil is to moist at times but we have sufficiant draining, please just give me some advice to give me piece off mind. She is so beautiful I don't want her to die.
I do see the starting of an infection. This can be cared for by spraying a mix of 1 part peroxide to 3 parts water onto the areas. You can also water with this mixture. It is important to do this as soon as possible to keep the infection from spreading.
