I have an outdoor hibiscus, what do I need to do for the winter? I live in zone 4.
Hardy hibiscus can usually survive winter outdoors but in cooler regions (up to zone 5) will need additional protection, such as mulch and wrapping. As long as you can give it added protection during extreme freezing conditions (and as long as you don't have the tropical type-which needs to be inside over winter), then your outdoor hibiscus should be ok. The tropical varieties are the ones that require growth indoors over winter. I have hibiscus. It's about 6-7 years old and is around 7 foot tall. I need to cut it back and transplant it. How far back can I cut it and when is the best time to do it? I have 5 hibiscus plants and they all have yellow leaves, some normal green ones and the leaves are small. What can I do to help them? Thanks. Jenny Ogilvie in west Footscray Melbourne Victoria
You can generally prune back the plant by 1/3.
Yellowing leaves can be a few different reasons. May indicate a watering issue, to much or to little.
Pests and disease also can cause yellowing leaves, as well as just normal leaf aging.
Neem Oil is a good treatment as this works as both an insecticide and fungicide.

I have two beautiful hibiscus planted in my covered garden. Do I need to trim them back and prepare for winter in September like I do for my roses?
For hibiscus growing outdoors, I would not prune them back right now, as this will encourage new growth which could get damaged by the winter cold. These plants are best pruned back in spring. I have been growing hibiscus for 25 years and I have never heard them referred to as tropical and/or hardy hibiscus. The genus is known as Rosa sinenis whether it is hardy or otherwise can you please explain?
Here is a website that explains the difference between tropical and hardy hibiscus:

Our outdoor hibiscus has lots of buds but they fall off before they bloom. Any advice on what might be wrong? Darlene Kalada
The most common reason for bud drop is insects, Thrips are possible along with a few other insects.
Treat the plant with Neem Oil.

We are zone 4. I have a plate hibiscus. Should it be cut back in the fall?
Just allow the plant to die back naturally, no need to cut it back.
It will grow back in the spring.
