Why are my clematis plants and hydrangeas getting dark brown leaves that start from the bottom of the plant and work its way upward? Most leaves start browning at the edges and continue spreading until the entire leaf is brown and dried up. This disease spreads quickly, killing the whole plant. I cut down the clematis to right above the ground and used more poles and a trellis to let it spread out more. I also watered once a week. It is growing back quickly but I have already noticed the browning of the leaves near the bottom of the plant again. Please help. Thanks much!
It sounds like you have clematis wilt. Here is an article on clematis wilt that will help you:

Happy gardening!
I have a clematis, which is approx 3 yrs old and is in a container. It is situated in a backyard, northeast facing. The top half has turned purple, all the stems, leaves and tendrils, etc. I think that this must be due to nutrient deficiency. What does anyone else think?
Container clematis will need some nutrients.

I have 20 varieties of clematis at present. Trying to purchase "sieboldii dwarf" and "polish". Do you know where I can find these varieties?
Do a Google search for the specific varieties you are looking for.
Also search for Clematis growers that mail order.
Ebay can be a good source for plants and seeds. Verify a seller has good feedback before purchasing.
I want to start a clematis from seeds that fell from the former season. Will this work? How and when do I plant?
Actually, propagating this plant from cuttings would be much easier and more efficient. Here is more information: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/vines/clematis/propagate-clematis-cuttings.htm
My Hagley hybrid Clematis has finished flowering and the leaves are all turning brown. Can I prune this now or should I wait till early spring? It is just that it sits outside my back door and is not pretty to look at at the moment.
Hold off pruning until early spring for most types or following bloom in others. This article may be helpful: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/vines/clematis/growing-clematis.htm
All advice says to prune in late winter/early spring before growth starts. But this winter is so mild I have growth already and one in particular has masses of growth quite high up. Should I cut them down now - risking possible frost later - or wait until say February? But then I will be cutting a lot of growth off so am worried they will do it all for a second time!
February or March is a great time to hard prune your Viticella Clematis variety.
You can hard prune right back to ground level, but I like to prune to about 12 inches in height.

I have an old clematis vine that has never been pruned. It blooms in summer and I was told that you can't prune them when they have a lot of old wood. What can I do? It blooms at the top, not anywhere else. Thank you.
