I had a pie cherry tree that recently broke off in a storm. We loved this tree and would like to replace it with the same variety, but do not know the variety. It produced a great yield of red-skin, yellow-meat pie (tart) cherries every year, without fail, even when there was a late frost (it was very hardy). The cherries ripened early--right around Memorial weekend, or shortly thereafter. I live in NE Kansas (zone 5b). Any idea what variety of cherry it might have been? The varieties I have seen in local nurseries claim they don't ripen until July--I would much rather have my early-ripening variety.
My best guesses are that it is a north star cherry:

or a montmorency pie cherry

The leaves on all my cherry trees are curling and they have tiny black insects in the curling leaves. What do I use for a spray to get rid of the bugs?
It sounds like your cherry tree is afflicted with either thrips or aphids. Regardless - the treatment is the same - insectical soaps or neem oil.

my cherry trees have curling leaves with tiny black insects in the curl
my peach and plum trees just have curling leaves with out any bugs
What spray do I use to treat my trees and get rid of the leaf curl and the tiny black insects?
Is there any feed you can mix to make tart cherries sweeter whilst on the tree and, if so, when can you take them off the tree?
Here is a link with great information and some tips to help insure healthy sweet cherries.

I have 20 year old cherry blossom tree (not fruit bearing). I planted it with my children 15 years ago in memory of my husband. To our horror someone has sawn through the tree about 2 feet from the base, and it's hanging on by a thread. Can I save it?
Since it's hanging on by a thread I regret to say that it is not salvageable and at this point would represent a safety hazard (it could tip over). You will want to seriously consider cutting it down.
Stella cherry tree fruited but not grown fruit. Instead, the fruit is just going brown and not growing then just falling of tree.
I believe your cherry tree might be afflicted with brown rot. Here is a link that will tell you more about brown rot and how to manage it:

Cherries not growing but going funny colour and falling of tree. This is a Stella cherry tree.
Temperature fluctuations hot or cold can cause the cherries to not form and or fall.
Dry conditions, too wet and wind all can effect the fruit on you tree.
A Stella Cherry also will slough off some cherries to give more energy to the rest of the tree. Cherry trees like Calcium, you should apply 10 to 30 percent every other year. The rains will water it in.

Have a 30 foot cherry tree that lost all blooms this year, no cherries. Foliage inside tree has thinned and 5 hunks of sap on outside of one inner trunk. Is this tree dying of old age? I bought the house three yrs. ago.
Yes, it is very possible that this is a tree that is dying of old age. As a last ditch effort, you can treat the tree with both a fungicide and a pesticide. This will take care of a significant portion of the treatable issues that may also be affecting it. I personally like neem oil as it is organic and systemic, which means that is safe for people and pets and is absorbed by the tree so that it even gets into areas that you may not be able to directly spray.
