I planted out purple sprouting broccoli plants in raised beds but something has eaten their leaves in the last few days! There is no sign of snails/slugs and these are the first things I have planted in my newly built raised beds (over a foot high). I have seen the odd small bird around my allotment though. Is it too late to save these plants? They were only about 5 inches tall before being eaten. If they can be saved, do I need netting over the top? Thanks.
I have checked the plants and cannot see any sign of the insect damage mentioned! Could it possinly be birds?
I meant Broccoli!

This is exactly how my garden bed of Kale looked last year!
There are several pests that love to eat Kale.

I grew broccoli last year that went to seed. This year I have volunteers growing but aren't growing any type of head; instead, they're going straight to bolting/flowering. Is there any way to prevent this? Where did I go wrong?
I'm sorry your broccoli bolted! You can cut what "would" have been the main heads off and with some TLC you might be able to keep the side heads from bolting, but they will probably stay small, if they form heads at all.
Extra water and a thick layer of mulch will help. The roots of broccoli plants need to stay cool -- heat getting to the roots is what causes broccoli to bolt.
This article may help you save what's left of your broccoli harvest this year, and will give you good tips on how to better prepare for next year:
Broccoli is producing side shoots, but I've harvested main crop. I want to grow again this fall. Do I pull these and plant new for fall?
Depending on the variety you are growing, you may get some secondary smaller broccoli florets to harvest after the main crop.
If your plant bolts, it is done and can be removed from the garden.

Last year I planted broccoli and when it grew very tall and had yellow flowers on.....even I knew it wasn't broccoli! A friend told me to pull it up as it was rape and would spread. I did so and wrote to the seed company who told me to give them details of the seeds. I had thrown the rest away by the time they replied! So had no details of numbers dates, etc. I have got more seeds this year and lo and behold, yellow flowers again, surely I can't be that unlucky. Can you clarify, before I pull them all up again, that it DOES NOT have yellow flowers? Many thanks
Your broccoli is bolting. Here is an article that will help you figure out why;

I planted some broccoli and cauliflower later than I should have and now the temps are ranging from 80s to mid 90s. Will it produce anything?
Sure they will -- just later in the season! Try adding some fertilizer to help them along if you want, and you'll have to watch that they don't bolt -- more information on that here:

I have little green caterpillars eating my broccoli leaves. I used a garden dust "seven" and then the next day I saw a large amount of green caterpillars all on the ground dead or dying under the plants. I watered with miracle grow liquid vegetable food to get all the dust off all the plants. What do I do about the almost fully eaten leaves? Do I dust again in a few days? This is my first real garden and these are things I'm not sure on.
You will need to use an insecticide with Bt.

We picked our broccoli and it seems like it has flowers but also seeds. Did we pick too late or can we still eat it?
Yes, your plants have bolted.
Harvesting is best early and often to the best vegetables.
