I have grown my own broccoli and broccolini, letting some of them go to seed, and was just wondering how to harvest the seeds to use next year? I am presuming the seeds are in the little seed pods on the top of the plant. At what stage are they ready and what color should they be? At the moment they are a green and soft, so I am thinking that they are not ready yet.
The pods will eventually dry out. This is when they are ready to harvest the seeds. Don't wait for too long after they dry, as they will burst open shortly after they are dry and ripe. Here is more information: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/broccoli/saving-broccoli-seeds.htm
Last year my broccoli set blooms instead of heading. This year it is exhibiting the same tendencies. Any advice?
This is called bolting. Unfortunately, once broccoli bolts, it quickly becomes inedible. To keep plants that are prone to bolting, they need to keep their soil cool. Mulch helps. We just got a flat of broccoli plants. Some of them already have a button size broccoli in the middle of the plant. Should we leave it on?
These are likely to bolt very quickly. I would not remove the head, as this will prevent them from forming a good head later on, but I would make double sure the soil you plant them in stays cool so they do not bolt.
I don't know when to harvest my broccoli. I think I missed it!

My broccoli plant has bolted and the flowers have disappeared. What do the broccoli seeds look like? I have one inch spike on the plant. Are those the young seeds? How long do I let them grow? Do I dry them out?
The head of the broccoli are immature flowers. You need to let the broccoli go to flower and allow it to get pollinated. It will lose its flowers and in their place will be little seed pods. They will mature over some time and several seeds will be inside a pod, over an inch long and a bit larger around than the seed. Harvest them when they are dried and tan colored. Break the pods open to get the seeds. This article will help with broccoli seeds: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/broccoli/saving-broccoli-seeds.htm
My broccoli plant keeps turning from a bud to yellow flowers that grow tall. What am I suppose to do? Do I cut that off? Why don't the broccoli flowers just grow?
A blind couple from church called and asked me to come check out their garden. They were told they couldn't harvest the broccoli because it had bloomed. I have never grown any myself so I advised them to wait until I could find out for them. They are very good people but are taken advantage of due to their kindness and disabilities. I just want to make sure they are not being swindled out for their plentiful growth. Thank you in advance for your time and help.
God Bless,
Pam
The broccoli is not harmful -- the part we normally eat is just the unopened flowers -- but it doesn't taste very good. Here's an article on growing broccoli: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/broccoli/bolting-broccoli-growing-broccoli-in-hot-weather.htm
You may have time to help them grow another crop.
