hi ! i planted 3 fairly large younger ( about 15 gallon i believe ) white birds of paradise early spring - i am in zone 9b . one had 3 stalks of growth and the other two had 2 stalks growing ... iv had a problem with one of the smaller two but really only one looks pretty rough randomly . iv had to prune it due to the leaves turning dark brown/yellow-ish ... i fertilized all threee & the main one im having a problem with also seemed to be unhappy with the fertilizer as well . iv been told to prune discolored problem leaves to the ground so that the plant has a better chance to work on new growth . but my main question is - if i do that will i kill the plant ? will they ( all of them ) be expected to eventually grow new stalks and survive - i have a 1/2 acre and hav spaced them very well i believe . im not one to give up on plants so easily & i love these things potential - i just feel like i need some pro tips . iv been googleing like crazy
Newly planted Bird of Paradise are very sensitive water fluctuations, too much or too little.
Avoid pruning until the plants are in dormancy or early spring.

Am considering transplanting African bird of paradise. I live in Arizona and wonder how successful the plant will survive?
You can transplant or divide plants in early spring or early summer.
Transplanting is not always successful with Bird Of Paradise.
I have been given a Bird Of Paradise plant. What is the best soil etc to palnt it in. Will it survive winter in Derbyshire. Is it best grown in a pot or garden.
Temperatures can not go lower then 50 degrees F. for Bird of Paradise to grow outdoors.

Is it true that a bird of paradise plant blooms only one time? I'm asking because I am into flower arranging and when I harvest a flower, I would always cut all the way down to ground level. Since babies grow quickly, this method keeps my garden a little organized. Should I continue this or just cut to my desired stem length and wait for a second or even a third bloom? I enclosed a picture of an arrangement I recently made.
Growing in the right condition and zone, your Bird of Paradise should produce multiple flowers.

how do I replant the Mexican bird of paradise ?
Transplanting can be difficult as the tap root is very deep.
You may want to start with new plants.

Hello, we have few plants of Birds of Paradise ( more then 20 years old)- big ( white-blue flowers) This summer leaves turning brown new leaves coming green then start getting brown edges and finely getting brown. Look like sun burn but this is the same spot for many years . Now if is rain season, but very hot in the day time. Please advise! Thank you in advance. Another problem with small plant ( orange - purple flowers) - more then 10 years old, blossomed only once, and only one flower. On direct sun, We ga fertilized it few time - without effect Larisa
Excess fertilizer could be an issue if you have fertilized.
Also overspray of herbicides or pesticides can effect the plants in this manor.
Fertilize every 3 months with a slow release, balanced fertilizer. A 10-10-10 formula.
Though full sun locations can give you the best flowers, full sun can easily scorch the leaves of your plants.
Morning sun with afternoon shade is best in warm climates.
You can also help the plants by maintaining moist soil. Mulching with 3 to 4 inches of hardwood mulch can help keep the plants moisture level even.
Remove dead plant material from the plants and around the plants. Wash away insects from the plants with a hose.
Avoid injuring the plants when pruning, weakened plants are susceptible to pests.
