How can I prune my bird of paradise that has ferns growing through it?
You could divide the plants in spring to aid in removal of the Ferns.

I live in Venice, FL and I have 2 of these plants. One of them 6 feet away is doing fine. The other is dying. Curled leaves, no growth. I fertilize both with palm fertilizer but the one is not responding. Any ideas?
Curling leaves can be an indicator of pests or disease.
Inspect your plants for any evidence of insects.
You can treat your plant with Neem Oil.

Wondering if the roots of these plants are capable of pushing retaining wall out on slope where they are planted over time?
You are correct, giant bird of paradise has extremely strong roots that can damage nearby landscape elements. This article will give you more information: http://www.thecoastnews.com/2010/10/28/plant-giant-birds-of-paradise-correctly/
We bought what we were told was a bird of paradise plant. But it does not look like the ones shown. The leaves are very lacy and the plant is now about 5 ft tall. Its branches are 1/2 around. They have to be staked or they could easily break. When it blooms, the flowers are a bright yellow and there are what looks like red fibers that cover the bottom of the flower. Can you tell me what plant this could be? Thank you for any help you can give me. Ronda Jobe
I will try, thank you for asking!
The flower shows black blotches all over but only starts to appear as the flower opens. A dissected flower shows no sign of disease prior to opening.
This likely is a fungus issue.
Treat the plant with Neem Oil and do so weekly as a preventative weekly through the growing season.
