Branches look like they have mold on them.
This sounds very much like Azalea Bark Scale.
Neem Oil can be used to treat the plant.

On an azalea plant, what is the greenish stuff coming on the twigs of the plant? My azalea bush had green leaves and loads of buds. Some buds opened and then I noticed days later the remaining buds became brown and dead looking. Upon closer inspection, I noticed the twiggy parts (bark) has green powdery looking stuff. I've always had azaleas and never had this problem before. It's only on one bush. What could be the problem and can the plant be saved?
Was there a frost that could have affected those buds? A frost would have turned them brown.
Are there tiny black bristles or spores on the surface of those brown buds? If so, you could have bud blight.
Any signs of insect pests?
My diagnosis would be further aided by a photograph if you are able to send one
I bought Miracle Grow 30-10-10 for azaleas acid loving plants. It says to feed every 7 to 14 days but does not give specific time of year, meaning when blooms are formed and flowering, etc. I have a humidifier running away from plant every day and I think all year round. I am assuming you feed it one time every 7 to 14 days. But do you do this all year round or when it's blooming and flowers are opening up? I need this clarified so I do it properly. This plant food is considered the fertilizer. Can I add Epsom salt and cooked coffee grounds or is it not necessary? Once the plant outgrows the container it is in, can I use Miracle Grow plant soil that contains 4 or 6 months feed around the plant?
would refer specifics about Miracle Grow to the manufacturer since I'm not an expert on the product.
You should be able to locate a customer service contact on the packaging or on their web site.

My azaleas look like they have warts on the leaves - what is it? The new growth has huge green wart looking growths on back side of leaf.
These are Azalea Leaf Galls.

Some of my azaleas are brown or partly brown. Have I lost them? The plants are at least 30 years old and we had a very hard winter.
I would review the information in the following article, which will outline a course of treatment for cold damaged plants. Recovery may be possible!

My father has one large azalea left from azaleas planted years ago when my mother was alive. They were all white. This year the large white one has one small grouping of purplish leaves on only one single branch. Is this rare? Of course, I told him it was mother's way of saying hello from heaven. What could cause this variation to appear on an old white azalea? It's never appeared before. I wanted to share the picture.
Thank you for sending the image.
An Azalea can sprout a 'sport'. A sport is a branch that produces different colored flowers then the parent plant.
